NORMAL, Ill. -
In the final weekend before the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships, Illinois State head track and field coach Elvis Forde will take a select group of student-athletes for a final tune up at the Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special, held in the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse in Charleston, Ill. The meet is slated to begin at 2 p.m. with the women's weight throws. Running events are scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
The meet which, is hosted by Eastern Illinois, will feature over 600 competitors from Illinois, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Valley foes Indiana State and Southern Illinois, as well as competitors from a variety of junior colleges.
The Redbirds will be traveling to the meet with a limited roster allowing certain individuals to get rest before the conference meet, while allowing others to gain more racing experience.
"We are not taking the bulk of our top-performers and those that will be competing for us at the conference meet," said Forde. "We are taking kids that need one more race to work on their speed and technical skills. We will also use this meet to allow a few kids to prove that they have the ability to compete at the conference meet."
Student-athletes that will be competing for the men's team include seniors Alex Straughn (triple jump), Nick Ragusa (pole vault) and freshman Colin Fane (throws). In the track events, senior Kelley Anderson, Diondre Williams and junior Luke Henrichs will look to gain speed in the short sprints and freshmen Zach Johnson and Luke Ryan will look to prove their skills in the distance races.
On the women's side, senior Frannie Epps and sophomore Megan Thompson will compete in the 60-meter hurdles, while freshman Jess Husted and junior Kathleen Thompson are set to race in the distance events. Freshmen Meaka Brents and Tia Harvey will be representing the Redbird sprinters at the meet.
