Second-Seeded ISU Will Face MSU-UE Winner Friday

For the first time since the 1995-96 season, Illinois State has earned the No. 2 seed for next week's (March 6-9) State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Redbirds, picked fifth in the league's preseason poll, finished the regular-season 22-8 (13-5 MVC), just two games behind top-seed Drake (25-4, 15-3 MVC). The Redbirds will play the winner of Thursday's Missouri State- Evansville game in the quarterfinal round Friday beginning at 6:05 p.m. at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. ISU's No. 2 seed is its highest since the 1997-98 season, when the Redbirds garnered the tournament's top seed for the second-consecutive campaign. Illinois State captured both the regular-season and tournament titles that season, the last No. 1 seed to accomplish the feat. No. 3 Southern Illinois and sixth-seeded Northern Iowa are also in ISU's bracket. No. 7 Missouri State and 10th-seeded Evansville will meet Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The Redbirds completed the season sweep over in-state rival Southern Illinois with a 57-49 win at SIU Arena Saturday night, handing the Salukis just their second home loss against a MVC foe since 2001. ISU's 22 total wins, and its 13 victories in Valley play, are both the most since the 1997-98 campaign, when the Redbirds advanced to the second-round of the NCAA Tournament. The No. 2 seeded has captured the MVC Tournament championships 13 times in the event's history, more than any other seeded team. Last season, second-seeded Creighton defeated No. 1 Southern Illinois, 67-61, to win the tournament title for the second time in three seasons. Below is the tournament schedule and times.
