PLACIDA, Fla. - Redshirt sophomore Joe Emerich tallied the Redbirds lone point as the Illinois State men's golf team fell to Illinois in the fifth annual Tinervin Cup. The Fighting Illini claimed an 8-1 victory Saturday at the Coral Creek Club in Placida, Fla.

Emerich, a Palatine, Ill. native, fired a 76 en route to a one-stroke victory in the match-play portion of Saturday's event.

Illinois swept the better ball part of the event, while also taking five-of-six match-play contests. Sophomore Tommy Bliefnick held the low score for Illinois State, firing a 75 in a one-stroke, match-play loss.

Even with the loss, head coach Ray Kralis was able to see some positive things in the way his team played.

"By no means is this the way we wanted to start the spring season," said Kralis. "Emerich and Bliefnick each played well for us but we continue to struggle with consistency. We are making positive strides but we still are learning what it takes to be successful, as a team, at this level. "

"The best thing for us right now is that we do not have much time to dwell on this," said Kralis. "We came down here knowing the kind of competition we would be seeing, so it will be good to put this one behind us and move on to San Antonio."

The Redbirds are back in action Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 18-19 at the University of Texas-San Antonio Oak Hills Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event takes place at the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. Tee times for the event are set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start both days.
