NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State junior guard Kristi Cirone was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season on Monday, Feb. 25. Cirone picked up the sixth player of the week award of her career after leading the Redbirds to a pair of wins last weekend to extend their winning streak to four games. She also moved into a tie with Tricia Wakely (Drake) and Shyla McKibbon (Evansville) for the fourth-most career honors in conference history.
Cirone average 18 points, six steals and four assists in the Redbirds' two games. In the win over Wichita State, she scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and tied her career-high with eight steals, the most by a Valley player this season. She followed that performance with a team-high 21 points, four assists and four steals in ISU's triumph over Missouri State. Cirone scored 10 of the Redbirds' first 12 points in the game, which moved her into the top-10 in career scoring at Illinois State. She is currently in 10th place with 1,335 career points. Her 12 steals on the weekend moved her from a tie for 16th place into sole possession of 11th place on the ISU all-time list with 164.
Earlier this season, Cirone became the 15th player in conference history to win back-to-back player of the week awards, with recognition on Jan. 7 and Jan. 14. She and Drake forward Jill Martin are the only players to receive three honors this year. Illinois State and Drake have each collected four player of the week awards this season.
The first-place Redbirds (22-3, 12-2 MVC) will try to avenge one of their conference losses when they visit Creighton (16-9, 9-5 MVC) on Friday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. The game is a part of the MVC Wildcard Weekend and will be shown live on FSN Midwest.
