NORMAL, Ill. -
The Illinois State women's golf team is headed to Omaha, Neb. to compete in the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships, hosted by Creighton, April 13-15 at the Oak Hills Country Club. The Redbirds garnered 94 first-place votes and are favored to win the 54-hole event.
First-year head coach Darby Sligh is excited for the opportunity and feels her team is well prepared to earn its first MVC title since 2005.
"I think we are right where we want to be heading into the conference tournament," said Sligh. "We have been consistent all year and we have seen some very good competition, especially in the past few weeks. I am excited to compete and the girls have done a nice job preparing."
The Redbirds are led by MVC Player and Newcomer of the Year candidate Marisa Milligan, who currently leads the Missouri Valley with a 75.2 per-round scoring average. Milligan, a Normal, Ill. native, has placed in the top-25 in each of her four events this spring.
ISU will also be counting on sophomore Stacey Miller, who leads the team with 24 rounds played, and is second on the team with a 77.5 per-round scoring average.
Also competing for the Redbirds are junior co-captains Tiffany Hockensmith and Marci Hill, and sophomores Britt Knutson and Laura Harris.
"All of our players have been consistent this year, and with the addition of Marisa, our team has the opportunity to really play well this weekend," said Sligh. "We had a great practice round in some snow and with tee times being pushed back a few hours, the extra rest will benefit us."
The 54-hole event will take place over three days, with 18 holes being played each day. Tee times for Sunday's first round begin at 12 p.m. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
