LINCOLN, Neb. -
The Illinois State Redbirds (0-2, 0-0 MVC) competed against the Colorado State Rams (0-1, 0-0 MWC), Saturday, in Lincoln, Neb. at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Rams took the win in the last match of the day, when sophomore Julia Zubkova fell to Hilary Tyler, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, in the No.2 singles position. The match gave the Rams a 4-3 victory.
"It was an extremely tight match between Julia and Tyler. It really could have gone either way for her, but I am happy that she played hard the entire way through," said head coach Chris Hoover.
In singles play, the Rams and the Redbirds matched wins, with each team winning three matches. Redbird senior Katri Miller competed at the No.1 singles position and defeated Lauren Strasburger, 6-4, 6-0. Senior Véronique Parke-Bédard also took home a win, defeating Laura Neal, 6-3, 7-6(3), in the No. 3 position. Junior Tanja Hrovatic grabbed the last Redbirds singles win at the No. 5 position against Greer Satherlie, 6-4, 6-1.
Along with Zubkova's loss, the `Birds were also defeated at the Nos. 4 and 6 singles positions. Senior Carolyne Parent lost to Anette Pohjalainen, 6-4, 6-1, while freshman Katie O'Riley was defeated at the No. 6 position by Caitlin Fluegge, 7-5, 6-3.
In the doubles competition, the Redbirds took home a single win at the No. 3 position. Duo Hrovatic and Parent topped Sarah Seltsam and Kristen Stople in a tie-breaker of 8-7(5). Partners Miller and Zubkova competed at the No. 1 position and lost to Tyler and Strasburger, 8-3. At the No. 2 position Parke-Bédard and O'Riley teamed up and were defeated by Pohjalainen and Neal, 8-5.
"Everybody played hard today and that is the most important thing," said Hoover. "We looked much better then we did against Nebraska, so I am happy."
The women's tennis team is set to take to the road Friday to compete in Indianapolis, Ind. against Butler. The match will begin at 5:00 p.m.
