Las Vegas, Nev. - Sophomore
Julia Zubkova pulled out the only Illinois State point, as the women's tennis team competed against nationally-ranked Oklahoma State (62), at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev., Saturday, Feb. 16. The Redbirds lost to the Cowgirls, 6-1, dropping the `Birds to a 2-4 season mark.
Zubkova competed at the No. 2 spot against Yawna Allen, taking the win in the only tie-breaking match of the day, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-1).
"I was really proud of Julia today," said head coach Chris Hoover. "The second match got to her a little bit, but she got competitive and ended up taking the win."
At the No. 1 spot, senior Katri Miller competed against her second nationally-ranked player of the weekend. She faced Iryna Tkachenko (70) and despite a close second set, she was topped 6-2, 7-6. Senior Véronique Parke-Bédard played in the No. 3 position and was bested by Nataliya Shatkovskaya, 6-2, 6-3. Fellow senior, Carolyne Parent, fell short to Sasha Belova, 6-2, 6-2, at the No.4 spot.
"All of the seniors have been playing really well, especially Carolyne," said Hoover. "She really has been playing her hardest and I know soon she is going to break though and get a key win for us."
In the last two singles flights, junior Tanja Hrovatic competed at the No. 3 position and was defeated by Sasha Belova, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Carmen Peters competed for the first time this spring season at the No. 6 spot and lost to Maryna Tkachenko, 6-4, 6-1.
The Cowgirls (4-1) earned the doubles point, after sweeping the Redbirds, however Hoover still feels the competition went well.
"It was a much better match today then yesterday's match against UNLV," said Hoover. "We had a lot of chances to gain some points and we showed a lot more competitiveness as a whole. Getting use to the outdoors has been a little taxing on the players, but hopefully competing against these teams will pay off later in the season."
The Redbirds will return to the road on Saturday, March 8 to compete against Illinois-Chicago at 3 pm in Oak Lawn, Ill.
