Zubkova Earns the Only Point as the Redbirds Fall, 8-1

LAIE, Hawaii - Sophomore Julia Zubkova earned the Illinois State women's tennis team its only point as the team fell 8-1 to No. 1 BYU-Hawaii. The Redbirds competed in Laie, Hawaii on Friday, March 14. The loss brings the Redbirds to a 4-7 spring season mark.

BYU-Hawaii is undefeated at 10-0.

Zubkova earned the point by defeating No. 6 Maggie Deng, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 singles spot.

In the rest of singles play, Katri Miller was defeated by No. 1 Elwen Li, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 1 flight. Senior Carolyne Parent competed at the No. 3 spot and was beat by Becky Lu, 6-2, 6-0. Junior Tanja Hrovatic played at the No. 4 spot and lost to Ramona Husaru, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Katie O'Riley lost to Jenny Chin, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 5 flight. Junior Carmen Peters lost to Ayako Ikeda, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 6 spot.

In doubles, ranked-duo of Deng and Li beat Miller and Parent, 8-2, at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 spot, Zubkova and O'Riley lost to Husaru and Lu, 9-8(3). Hrovatic and Peters lost to Chin and Ikeda, 8-0.

The Redbirds will compete next against No. 17 Hawaii Hilo, on Saturday, March 15, in Hilo, Hawaii. The time of the first serve has yet to be determined.
