Maureen Newell provisionally qualified for nationals in the mile while teammate Erica Hoffman fell just short of the mark at the Akron Open, and IUP athletes earned seven top four finishes at the West Virginia Shell Games to highlight the indoor track and field team's performance on Saturday. Newell posted a time of 5:05.23 to finish fourth overall and enter the top 12 nationally in the mile. Hoffman, competing in the mile for the first time this season, had a time of 5:07 to miss the provisional qualifying mark by less than one second. At West Virginia, Brianna Liebold won the long jump at 18 feet, one-half inch. Liz Tepsic had a second place finish for the women's team with a leap of 35-10 in the triple jump. On the men's side, Chris Gardner had a pair of high finishes. He was third in the long jump at 21-1 and fourth in the high jump at 6-3. Troy Litten was second in the pole vault (15-6), Nate Shelly was third in the mile (4:33) and Alec Rice was fourth in the pole vault (14-0). |
