Troy Litten won the pole vault and javelin and Chris Gardner, Sean Strauman and Gretchen Colwell also captured first place finishes at the Bennie Benson Memorial track and field meet at Robert Morris. On Friday at the Bucknell Distance Carnival, Maureen Newell moved up the national list in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:36 and Stacie Stockard provisionally qualified for nationals in the steeplechase in 11:23.3. Nate Shelly improved his time in the 5000 by 15 seconds, covering the distance in 15:07.49 while Lindsey Scheller had a time of 18:25 in her 5000 race. At the Robert Morris meet, Litten improved his national qualifying mark in the pole vault to 16 feet, two inches while also pulling off a surprising victory in the javelin with a throw of 184 feet. Sean Strauman won the 800 in 1:57.87 while Steve Wainwright took second with a time of 2:00.05. Gardner continued his ascent up the PSAC performance list, placing in the top four in three events. He won the long jump with a leap of 23-1 ½, took second in the high jump by clearing the bar at 6-6 3/4 and was fourth in the 100, crossing the finish line in 11.25. Colwell won the hammer throw with a best effort of 153-10 while also taking third in the shot put (37-6) and discus (114-10). Alec Rice was second to Litten in the pole vault with a jump of 14-8. Taking third place finishes in the men's competition were Kevin Bittner in the discus (140-4), Russ Langley in the javelin (178-1) and Matt Celestin in the long jump (22-1). Bridget Connolly was the runner-up in the women's 5000 with a time of 19:58.78 and Jackie Youra tied for second in the high jump with a jump of 4-11. Abbey Doran placed high in a pair of events, taking third in the 400 (1:02.87) and seventh in the 200 (27.87). Nicole Shannon was fourth in the javelin (122-8), Liz Tepsic took fifth in the long jump (15-5) and Tatyana Maltseva was sixth in the 1500 (5:15.82). IUP will host the IUP Open next Saturday at Miller Stadium. |
