Cincinnati, OH-The IPFW Women's Track and Field team placed 9th out of 19 scoring teams at Saturday's Oliver Nikoloff Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
The Martinez twins led IPFW, breaking a pair of school records.
Crystina Martinez was the lone individual champion of the team winning the 3,000m steeplechase by 21 seconds. Her time of 10:47.29 shattered the IPFW record set by Mary Ballinger in 2007, and more importantly, surpassed the NCAA Regional Qualification Standard of 10:50.25. Crystina is now eligible to run in the NCAA Mid-East Regional Track and Field Meet at the University of Arkansas on May 30-31, 2008.
Coach Mike Fruchey was very enthusiastic about Crystina's performance, stating, "Crystina ran an exceptional race. She was by herself, but stayed focused on her pace. We had calculated that she needed to run about 87 seconds per lap and I was telling her each time around how much she was under the pace. The last 600 I just tried to motivate her as much as I could and she came through big-time. It was a great effort by a great athlete."
Crystal Martinez also ran a great meet, finishing fourth in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:44.24. Her time bested the school mark of 4:44.56 posted by Lauren Wilson (formerly Simpson) in 2005.
Also scoring in the 1,500m run was Val Hardesty with a time of 4:48.88. She placed seventh overall.
For their next meet, the team will travel to Oxford, OH to compete in the Miami Invitational on Saturday, April 12, 2008.
