JACKSON, MISS. - Jackson State spilt a doubleheader Saturday but won a three-game series this weekend against Mississippi Valley State at the JSU baseball complex, improving its SWAC record 4-1. The Tigers beat the Delta Devils 4-0 in game one on Friday and 7-4 in game two but lost game three 7-3 Saturday. Derrick JOHNSON had a total of five hits and five runs batted in during the three-game series to compel the Jackson State effort. Pitcher Charles Williams was the story of game one as he pitched eight strong innings, allowing only four hits and striking out eight. Johnson's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth gave the Tigers breathing room in a close contest. LaDerek CAMPER, Cortez COLE and Jerome TYES each had two RBI in game two to pace the JSU attack. Marquise ZACHARY tossed a complete game for the victory, scattering eight hits to earn the win. Things did not go as well for the Tigers in the final game. Mississippi Valley broke open a 2-2 tie with a five-run fifth inning. Johnson drove in three runs for JSU and Enrique Quintero knocked in the other. Pernell HALLIMAN took the loss on the mound. The Tigers will return to action at home on March 17 at 6:00 p.m. when they take on Coppin State. |
