JACKSON, MISS. - Six different players had two hits to help Jackson State overcome an early deficit to defeat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 13-6 at the JSU Baseball Complex Wednesday night. Center fielder Cortez COLE was the only JSU player with just one hit but it was big - a 3-run home run during a four-run fifth inning that gave the Tigers the lead for good. Charles BROWN also drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double in a four-run seventh. JSU starter Marlon SOMMERVILLE pitched only two innings but gave up four runs as UAPB led 4-2 after four innings. But Cole's homer, followed by a run-scoring double by designated hitter Derek Johnson, put the Tigers ahead 6-4. The lead was pushed to 10-4 in the seventh thanks to Brown's double and a RBI double by shortstop LaDerek Camper. David De Le Calle, who pitched five-plus innings in relief to earn the win, gave up two runs in the eighth, but the Tigers finished the scoring with three in the bottom of the inning. Two runs scored when Pernell HALLIMAN reached on an error. He scored on a bases loaded walk to Camper. THe Tigers now post a 28-14 overall record. Jackson State is back in action Friday when it begins a three-game series at Mississippi Valley State. First pitch is at 1 p.m. |
