JACKSON, MISS. - Jackson State's baseball team had hoped to flex its dominance in a three-game weekend series against Alabama State, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Intermittent downpours on Saturday stopped the first game of a doubleheader in the seventh inning and canceled the nightcap. The Tigers, though, we still able to earn a two-game sweep over the Hornets with a 10-7 victory on Friday night followed by an 8-4 win Saturday afternoon at the JSU Baseball Complex. In both games, JSU needed late-game rallies to pull out the win. In the series opener, two-out RBI by LaDerek Camper and Enrique Quintero broke a 7-all tie in the bottom of the seventh to give the Tigers the lead for good. Jerome TYES had a huge game, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI. His three-run shot in the sixth helped erase an early 5-2 deficit. Camper had three hits, scored four times and drove in two runs while Quintero earned the victory with three innings of two-hit ball in relief. In game two, JSU trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth. Run-scoring singles by Willie WESLEY and Camper tied the game before Quintero gave the Tigers the lead with a grand slam. It turned out to be the most important hit of the game, as rain - which had interrupted the game several times - finally washed it out in the seventh inning. Quintero had three hits and Derrick JOHNSON added two and helped make a winner out of Marlon SOMMERVILLE. He allowed just one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief. The Tigers are back in action Wednesday, when they travel to take on the University of Mississippi. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. |
