BASEBALL: Tigers split twin bill with Aggies

JACKSON, Miss.- The Jackson State Tigers split the first two games of a three game series with the North Carolina A&T Aggies on senior day at the JSU Baseball Complex Friday evening.

JSU won the opener 8-7 and dropped the nightcap 12-9.

Senior Charles Williams picked up the win in the first game. He went five innings and gave up five runs on six hits. Tim Johnson suffered the loss. He pitched six innings and gave up seven runs on 11 hits.

The Aggies got on the scoreboard in the first inning when CJ Beaty hit a home run. The Tigers quickly took the lead, scoring four runs in the second. Both teams scored two runs in the third inning. JSU increased its lead to 7-3 in the fourth. The Aggies trimmed JSU's lead to 7-5 with a two run fifth inning. In the seventh inning NCA&T scored a run to tie the game at 7-7. In the bottom of the tenth inning Willie WESLEY hit a walk-off homer for the win.

Pernell HALLIMAN and Jamaal THELWELL led JSU's offense, recording three hits each. Halliman also had a run and an RBI, while Thelwell had two runs and three RBI. Beaty had three hits, two runs and an RBI for NCA&T.

In the second game JSU started slowly and allowed the Aggies to take a 7-0 lead after two innings of play. The Aggies increased their lead to 9-0 with a two run fourth inning. NCA&T scored its final three runs of the game in the sixth inning.

Unfortunately, the JSU bats came alive a little to late. In the bottom of the sixth Jackson State scored seven runs to cut the Aggies' lead to 12-7. In the seventh JSU scored two runs to make the final scored 12-9.

Halliman and Cortez COLE led JSU offensively, recording two hits and two runs each. Cole also had two RBI.

The third game of the series will be played Saturday at 12 p.m. at the JSU Baseball Complex. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 years and under.
