JACKSON, Miss.- The Jackson State Tigers picked up their seventh SWAC win of the season, defeating the Southern Jaguars 85-71 in front of an announced crowd of 1,627 fans Monday evening.

Four Tigers scored in double figures to lead JSU to the victory. With the win, the Tigers improve to a 7-4 conference record and a 9-15 overall mark. . Southern fell to a 6-5 record in the conference and 8-14.

Kevin White got the Tigers on the scoreboard early with a lay-up and JSU took a 2-0 lead with 19:40 to play in the first half.

Geri Guillory responded with a three pointerto give the Jaguars a 3-2 lead followed by jumpers by Chris Davis and Barry Honore' to extend the Jaguar lead to 7-2 with 16:00 left in the first half.

Davis continued the run for the Jaguars as he nailed a three-pointer to make the score 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of action.

Darrion Griffin cut the Southern 12-0 run with a lay-up at the 13:30 mark. The Jags lead 16-7 with 13:00 remaining in the half before the Tigers responded with a 5-0 run to cut the Southern lead down to 16-12.

Davis continued his hot shooting from behind the arc, helping Southern build a 19-12 lead. Catraiva Givens followed with a thee of his own to cut the lead to 19-15 with 9:55 remaining. Griffin followed that with another three to bring the Tigers within one, 19-18.

Southern's Julius Ingram e hit a three to make the score 26-24. JSU's De'Suan Dixon tied the game at 26-26 at the 4:55 left in the first half with a tap -in basket. Grant Maxey extended the JSU lead with a three pointer.

With the game tied at 29-29, Southern's Barry Honore's steal and lay-up gave the Jaguars a 31-29 lead with 3:37 left in the half. The Tigers trailed 34-31 at half time.

Southern's Davis led all scorers with 18 first half points. Griffin and Maxey had nine points respectively for the Tigers in the first half.

Southern opened the second half of play, with an Ingram put back lay-up. Jeremy Caldwell nailed two free-throws and the Tigers cut into the Southern lead, 36-33 with 17:44 left on the clock.

At the 15:49 mark a Griffin lay-up gave the Tigers a 37-36 lead. Griffin then made a lay-up and a break-away dunk to increase JSU's lead to 41-36.

A 6-0 run brought the Jags within two points 54-52 with 9:07 remaining in the game. However, JSU would respond with an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 63-52 with 8:10 left in regulation. Caldwell then converted two technical foul shots making the score 65-52.

Catraiva Givens made a three , giving JSU a 70-56 lead with 6:45 remaining.

Southern went on a 9-3 run, to cut JSU's lead down to 75-65 with 3:34 left in the game. The Tigers stepped up their defensive effort and held on for the win.

Caldwell led for the Tigers with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Other contributors for the Tigers include: Griffin who had 19 points, Maxey and Garrison Johnson each had 13.

Davis finished with a game high 26 points, Honore' had 11 and Ingram chipped in 10.

The Tigers gear up for a Texas road-swing on Friday, February 15. First up, the Tigers will take-on the Panthers of Prairie View on Saturday, Feb. 16 before traveling to Houston to take on the Texas Southern Tigers. Both games are set for 7:30 p.m.
