Feb. 14, 2008
After missing a season high 17 free throws two days earlier, Johnson C. Smith University head coach Steve Joyner knew that would not decide his fate against divisional foe Livingstone College (12-13, 6-10 CIAA) . JCSU used a balanced offensive attack, with four players scoring in double figures, to lead the Golden Bulls to an 81-70 win over the host Blue Bears of Livingstone College. The entire game was a nail biter with neither team controlling a significant lead at any point. By the intermission, the score was 36-34 in favor of JCSU (15-9, 9-7 CIAA). Smith outscored LC 45-36 in the second half to take the 11 point victory 81-70. Edmund Rainey and David Sanders, both seniors from Buffalo, N.Y. led the charge in tonight's victory. Rainey, who averages nine points per game, has given the gold and blue at least 11 points in each of his last five games. Sanders had his first double-figure evening since Bluefield State on Jan. 8th where he also had 12 points. He also had a team high seven rebounds. Ryan Scott (Reston, Va.) and Jerry Hollis (Charlotte, N.C.) contributed 12 and 11 points respectively. Ivan Jackson led the Blue Bear attack with 18 points. He converted 4-of-9 three pointers, matching the number of long balls the entire JCSU squad had. Michael Duncan had 13 points, while Travis Young pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. JCSU will travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday to play the Bears of Shaw University. Game time will take place around 3 p.m. after the women's televised contest at Broughton High School. |
