Women's BasketballJCSU WOMEN SWEEPS SEASON SERIES; DOWNS ELIZABETH CITY STATE 75-66

The Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls remained perfect on their home court with a 75-66 win over the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings Saturday afternoon at Brayboy Gymnasium. With the victory JCSU improves to 6-2 overall and remains perfect in the CIAA with a 3-0 overall record. The Lady Vikings drop to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference. On a lay-up by Shemika Jones (Largo, Md.) at the 15:04 mark of the first half made the score 9-8 in favor of the Lady Golden Bulls, the home team would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Lady Vikings committed 17 turnovers in the first stanza leading to 18 points for JCSU. Rochelle Bodie (Raleigh, N.C.) scored 11 of her team high 16 points in the first half more than enough to give the Lady Golden Bulls a 38-28 halftime lead. In the second half ECSU strung together a few scoring spurts narrowing the JCSU lead to three points on three different occasions, the final one on a jumper by Celeste Trahan with 11:48 left in the game. The Lady Golden Bulls then defeated all hopes of an ECSU comeback with a 16-2 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach. Besides Bodie's 16 points, three other JCSU players amassed double figures with Ashley Chase (Baltimore, Md.)and Demetria Bell (Indianapolis, Ind.) contributing 12 and 10 points, respectively. Kyria Buford (Charlotte, N.C.)finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. Celeste Trahan collected the 70th double-double of her career with game highs of 23 points and 18 rebounds in the loss. The Lady Golden Bulls will return to action in Brayboy Gymnasium when they host the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University on Monday, December 17th. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. |
