Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Senior third baseman Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day) went 4-for-4 at the plate to help lift the #21 Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 12-1 victory over Washington College in Chestertown, MD on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays (15-3, 5-0 CC) won their 11th straight contest as senior right hander Joe Zaccaria (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) threw six strong innings.

Hopkins got its offense going in the second inning with a pair of runs. The first three runners of the frame reached before Washington starter Greg Perret got junior first baseman Ryan Biner (Crystal Lake, IL/Prairie Ridge) to ground into a double play. The Shoremen got the first two outs of the inning on the play but senior center fielder Rob Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll) came home on the play for the first run of the game. Emr would score the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Hopkins added to its lead in the third inning as senior shortstop Jonas Fester (Dallas, TX/Syosset) and Emr each had RBI singles.

Hopkins led 6-0 after four innings of play as Zaccaria was in control on the mound. He had allowed just two hits keeping the Shoremen off the scoreboard to that point

The Blue Jays' big inning came in the fifth as they put four runs on the board. The first four runners reached base in the inning as Hopkins got a run on senior catcher Tony Margve's (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) RBI single, while Biner had an RBI double to plate the second run. Senior second baseman Nate Adelman (Redwood City, CA/Menlo School) had an RBI single in the inning and the final run scored on a failed pickoff by Washington.

Hopkins led 12-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth. Washington tallied its only run of the contest in that frame. The Blue Jays got the first two outs of the inning before Matt Boucher reached on an error. After a wild pitch advanced Boucher to second, Perret came through with a single up the middle to plate the run.

The Hopkins' bull-pen relieved Zaccaria to start the seventh and shut the Shoremen down the rest of the way for a 12-1 victory. Junior Dan Merzel (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) made a solid bare handed play to end the contest.

Zaccaria went six innings, surrendering one unearned run with seven strikeouts and four walks. Perret took the loss for Washington after giving up six runs in four innings on the hill.

Emr finished the day 4-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI while Adelman and Biner were each 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Fester extended his hit streak to 28 games with a single in the third inning while Pietroforte was 1-for-2 with three runs scored after walking twice.

The Blue Jays will be back in action tomorrow, April 3 when they travel to Washington D.C. to take on Catholic University. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
