BALTIMORE, MD - The #22 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays shut out visiting Washington College 9-0 for the first time since 1982 on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The win moves the Blue Jays to 8-5 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The Shoremen suffer their first loss of the season and slip to 11-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Hopkins swept the doubles matches to take control early. Senior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) and freshman Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/Saint Xavier) won 8-0 at first, beating Andrew Laux and Todd Green. Seniors Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) and Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) beat Michal Switala and Jon Keller 8-2. Freshman Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and sophomore David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) closed out doubles with an 8-3 win at second, beating Adam Cranford and Brian Danver.

In singles action, Roberti dropped just one game in beating Keller at sixth to give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead in the match. Wang then clinched the match for Hopkins with a 6-2, 6-0 win at third over Laux. At second, Vasoontara defeated Switala 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) won his fifth straight match, beating Danver 6-1, 6-4 at fifth. Blythe won his 15th match of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 win at fourth. Maldow then wrapped up the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at first. The win was his 18th of the season, tying his own school record for wins in a season.
 

 

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 12 with a road trip to Franklin & Marshall. The Centennial Conference match is slated to start at 11:00 am.
