HAVERFORD, PA - Johns Hopkins senior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) won his 100th career match on Tuesday to help the #22 Blue Jays to a 9-0 win over the Haverford Fords. Hopkins improves to 11-5 overall and 7-0 in the Centennial while Haverford slips to 8-6 and 6-1 in the conference.
Hopkins opened the match by sweeping all three doubles. Freshman Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/Saint Xavier) and senior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) beat Tom Kinrade and Evan Stiegel 8-3 at first. That marked the 56th career doubles win and 100th overall win for Vasoontara, making him the first tennis player in school history (male or female) with 100 career wins. At second, sophomore David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) and freshman Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) won 8-1 over Marc Adelberg and Hailu Yang. Seniors Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) and Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) won at third, defeating Stephen Feder and Marc Rudolph 8-2. For Naftilan it was his 24th career Centennial Conference doubles win, breaking the school record.
In singles action, the Blue Jays won five of six matches in straight sets. Maldow beat Kinrade 6-1, 6-4 at first. Vasoontara then won at second over Feder. Feder won the first set 7-5 but Vasoontara won the second 6-2. The third set was decided in a tiebreaker, which Vasoontara won 7-0. Wang lost just one game at third, beating Stiegel 6-1, 6-0. Blythe also lost just one game in beating Rudolph at fourth. At fifth, sophomore Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) defeated Yang 6-0, 7-5. Roberti won at sixth, beating Adelberg 6-4, 6-2.
Hopkins, which has won 18 consecutive Centennial Conference matches, will host Dickinson on Saturday, April 19. The conference match is slated to begin at 4:00 pm, following the women's match-up with Ursinus.
