Box Score

FAIRFAX, VA - George Mason's Madalyn Jamison scored with 2:39 to break a 10-10 tie and the Patriots defeated #9 Johns Hopkins 11-10 on Saturday afternoon in Fairfax, VA. For the Blue Jays (0-1) it is their first loss to the Patriots (1-0) since May 3, 2003. Sophomore Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's) scored four goals to lead Hopkins.

George Mason scored three unanswered to open the game, holding Hopkins scoreless for the first 22 minutes of the half. Schrum put Hopkins on the board with her first of the season, but it was answered by a goal from Laura King just over a minute later and the Patriots led 4-1 with 6:52 to play. Freshman Brianna Cronin (Arlington, MA/Arlington) cut it to two with her first career goal and then a tally from junior Gina Maranto (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) made it a 4-3 game. The Patriots extended their lead to 6-3 with a pair of back-to-back goals from Megan Bartlett.

Schrum scored on a free position shot just 1:22 into the second half to cut the deficit to two, but goals from Bartlett and Chelsea Gamble once again pushed the lead out to four. Senior Laure Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) sparked a three-goal as she sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from senior Kirby Houck (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest). Gamble briefly ended the run with her second of the afternoon, scoring with 13:06 to play to make it a 9-7 game.

This time it was Schrum who would ignite a three-goal run, sandwiching a pair of goals around Cronin's second of the day. Schrum's fourth of the day with 7:50 to play gave Hopkins its first lead of the day. The upset-minded Patriots would not go away, getting goals from Brittany Berger and Jamison to take the win.

Sophomore Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) played the first half in goal for Hopkins and finished with one save. Junior Amelia Harris (Clifton, VA/J.W. Robinson) played the second half and had two saves for the Blue Jays. Sara Longobucco finished with 12 saves in the cage for Mason, including eight in the second half.

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, February 26 at George Washington. Game time is set for 3:30 pm at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
