Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Carter Foote completed her hat trick with 3:17 to play in the second overtime to lift #17 Vanderbilt to an 11-10 win over #14 Johns Hopkins in American Lacrosse Conference action Sunday. The Blue Jays slip to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference while the Commodores improve to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the ALC.

Senior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) struck first to put Hopkins on the board early. Just 2:09 in, she dodged down the right alley and scored on a low shot for her 13th of the year. Cara Giordano knotted the score at 1-1 at 11:27 off a goal line extended pass from Margie Curran.

Sophomore Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's) and junior Gina Maranto (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) then scored back-to-back goals just 64 seconds apart to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead. Curran answered for Vanderbilt with an unassisted tally at 17:17 to make it 3-2. Schrum then caused a turnover on a Commodores clear with Schwarzmann picking up the ground ball. She then found senior Kirby Houck (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) racing to cage for a fast break goal to make it 4-2.

Schrum scored her second of the afternoon with 9:52 to play, dodging across the top of the arc and shooting in traffic. After a failed Hopkins clear, Leslie Koch went right to the cage on the restart and scored on a low shot to make it 5-3. Schrum completed her hat trick with 1:38 to play on a nifty pass from sophomore Kim Dubansky (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh). But a Katherine Denkler goal just 29 seconds later made it a 6-4 game going into the half.

Maranto pushed the Blue Jays lead to three just 3:16 into the second, but Curran quickly answered for the Commodores to make it a 7-5 game with more than 25 minutes to play. Senior Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and Houck responded with back-to-back tallies and Hopkins led 9-5 with 19:01 remaining. It took nearly six minutes, but Ashley Paschall cut into the Blue Jays lead, scoring on a feed from Curran. That ignited a 4-0 run for the Commodores that culminated in Foote scoring with just eight seconds left in regulation to force overtime with the score even at 9-9.

Schwarzmann put Hopkins up 10-9 just 55 seconds into the first overtime when she dodged across the middle and shot as she was falling to the turf. Giordano answered for Vanderbilt to once again tie the game, scoring with 2:34 remaining in the first overtime. Denkler had a chance for Vandy with just three seconds on the clock when she was awarded a free position. But her shot was blocked and never got to the cage.

In the second overtime, Hopkins got the first shot, but Brooke Shinaberry got the save on Schwarzmann and Heather Koutrakos scooped up the ground ball to gain possession for the Commodores. After Sarah Downing's shot went wide, Curran fed Foote from behind the cage for the game-winner.

Sophomore Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) finished with a career-high 12 saves in the loss, while Shinaberry posted 11.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 9 at UMBC. The non-conference game is slated to begin at 7:30 pm.
