Ibello, Stamper Lead #16 Johns Hopkins to 15-7 Win at UMBC
April 9, 2008 BALTIMORE, MD - The #16 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team scored 11 second half goals en route to a 15-7 win at UMBC on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays move to 6-6 on the season as the Retrievers fall to 4-10. In the win, senior Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) became the 10th player in school Division I history to notch 100 career points. Stamper needed just 13:17 to notch her second hat trick of the season as the Blue Jays took a 3-1 lead midway through the opening half. She put Hopkins on the board just 1:07 in when she scored on a quick shot off a feed from sophomore Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn). Less than two minutes later, she dodged the right alley and scored on a shot to the far post. Megan Linkous scored for the Retrievers just 51 seconds later to make it a one-goal game. From behind the cage, Amanda Pappas fed the ball to Linkous who scored on a bounce shot. A little over nine minutes later, Stamper completed her hat trick to push Hopkins lead back to two at 3-1. UMBC cut the lead back to one when Kelly Burgoyne scored on a quick shot with 17:41 to play. Her goal was answered by a strike from sophomore Paige Ibello (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale) at 23:13. Sophomore Danielle Ensley (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park), goal line extended, found Ibello open in front of the cage for her 16th of the season to make it a 4-2 game. The Retrievers would have the final say of the half as Ali Levendusky scored with just 10 seconds remaining. Hopkins opened the second half on a 5-1 run as the Blue Jays pushed their lead out to 9-4. Senior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) opened the scoring on a dodge down the right alley. Senior Kirby Houck (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) then picked up her own rebound and fired it home for her 19th of the season at 6:40. Less than two minutes later Burgoyne cut the lead back to two when she curled around the cage and scored her second of the night. Hopkins responded with a goal from freshman Brooke Foussadier (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township) and back-to-back goals for Ibello.
Burgoyne scored her third of the night to end the Blue Jays run at 16:37 to make it a 9-5 game. But Hopkins came right back with five unanswered from five different Blue Jays. Burgoyne and Levendusky sandwiched goals around a strike from junior Jenny Higgins (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) to account for the final 15-7 score. Ibello finished with four goals on the night to lead the Blue Jays. Levendusky and Burgoyne each tallied hat tricks to lead the Retrievers. Sophomore goalie Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) tied her career-high with 12 saves, including seven in the first half, to earn the win. Kate Quick posted eight saves for UMBC in the loss. Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, April 13 as the Blue Jays travel to Charlottesville, VA to take on the Virginia Cavaliers. The opening draw is slated for 1 pm. |
