Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The #4 Virginia women's lacrosse team opened the game with a 9-0 run en route to a 17-6 win over visiting Johns Hopkins Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 6-7 on the season while the Cavs improve to 11-4.

Six different Cavaliers scored in the game-opening 9-0 run before senior Kirby Houck (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) put Hopkins on the board with 8:01 to play in the first half. Houck rolled the crease and scored to Kendall McBrearty's off-side shoulder. Brittany Kalkstein came right back for the Cavaliers with a free position goal with 6:01 to play. Hopkins responded with back-to-back goals from sophomore Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn) and senior Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright). Bathras dodged the right alley and scored on a low shot with 2:05 to play. Just 46 seconds later, after a failed Virginia clear, senior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) fed a streaking Stamper who fired a shot past McBrearty with just 1:19 to play.

Coming out of the half and trailing 10-3, Schwarzmann cut the deficit to six on a dodge down the middle for her ninth of the season. Virginia answered with five straight to push its lead out to 15-4. The Blue Jays halted the run with goals from Stamper and sophomore Paige Ibello (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale) to make it a 15-6 game. But Ashley McCulloch and Caity Whiteley scored for the Cavs to account for the final 17-6 score.

Schwarzmann and Stamper led the Blue Jays with two points apiece. Sophomore Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) earned the start and finished with four saves in 19:45. Freshman Julianne Wisner (Parkton, MD/Notre Dame Prep) came on in relief and finished with seven saves. For the Cavs, McBrearty posted seven saves with Sara Hairfield coming on in relief with 2:45 to play and making two saves.

Stamper is now tied for eighth in school Division I history with 86 career goals. Schwarzmann ranks eighth in school DI history with 110 career points. Stamper is also just six draw controls shy of tying the Hopkins all-time record of 202.

Hopkins continues its four-game road swing on Friday night when the Blue Jays travel to Evanston, IL to take on the #1 Northwestern Wildcats. The American Lacrosse Conference contest is slated to begin at 7:00 pm CST. CSTV will televise the game live.
