MELBOURNE, FL - The #14 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team opened its spring trip with a 6-3 win at Florida Tech on Monday. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0 while the Panthers fall to 11-8.

Hopkins opened the match with wins at second and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Junior Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and sophomore Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) improved to 3-1 on the season with a 9-7 win over Andrea Madrigal and Nicole David at second. Sophomore Abby Dwyer (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach) and junior Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango) shutout Sarah Collins and Sarah Dinovi 8-0 at third doubles. The Panthers picked up a point at first doubles as Michaela Horvathova and Natalia Ramos defeated freshman Yasmine Elamir (Saddle River, NJ/Heritage Academy (SC)) and sophomore Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) 8-3.

In singles play, sophomore Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) defeated Collins without dropping a game at fifth. Berlinghof then won at sixth, while dropping just one game, to Dinovi. Ramos picked up a win at first for FIT, defeating Matava 6-1, 6-0. Bhamidipati lost just her second match this season, falling 6-1, 6-3 at second to Horvathova. At third singles, Dwyer was up 4-3 in the first set on Madrigal when she retired. Likewise, Elamir was up at fourth singles (3-0 over David) when her opponent retired.
 

 

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday at Flagler in a 2:30 pm match. The Blue Jays defeated the Saints 6-3 last season in Florida.
