Lady Owls Set to Sprint
Feb. 8, 2008
KENNESAW, Ga. - The Lady Owls continue their climb towards the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference standings as Kennesaw State battles Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center. Two of the top scoring teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Lady Bulldogs (3rd, 66.7 ppg) and the Lady Owls (4th, 65.8 ppg) enter the game with polar opposite streaks. While each team is coming off a win, the Lady Owls against USC Upstate and Gardner-Webb against North Florida , Kennesaw State (11-10, 6-3 A-Sun) has won three of its last four games while the Lady Bulldogs have dropped four of their last five games. The Lady Bulldogs (9-13, 5-4 A-Sun) have three players scoring in double-figures led by Margaret Roundtree's 13.1 points per game. Roundtree, a 6-foot sophomore and one of four GWU players over six-feet tall, is shooting 49.6 percent from the field and is pulling down 7.5 rebounds. Freshman guard Monique Hudson is averaging 12.6 while 6-foor-1-inch forward Laura Povilonyte is at 10.6 ppg. Gardner-Webb is looking to catch the Lady Owls in the standings as they sit just one game behind Kennesaw State. The trio of Gardner-Webb players have led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring in all but one game this season, a, 66-54, loss to IUPUI in which LaTroya Pope led with 12 points. Kennesaw State, who is currently two games behind first-place Jacksonville in the standings, will have to contend with the inside game of Gardner-Webb if it looks to win its second straight game. However, the Lady Bulldogs will also need a stellar effort on defense as the Lady Owls are averaging nearly 80 points in their last two games. The Lady Owls have a strong inside-out game thanks to their top two scorers in center Britteny Henderson (13.4 ppg) and point guard Greteya Kelley (13.1 ppg). Henderson, who seems to be headed to an all-conference season, is sixth in the league in scoring, second in rebounding and at 55.0 percent, is third in the league in field goal percentage. Kelley can cause havoc on both ends of the court. The ninth leading scorer in the league (tied with Roundtree of GWU), Kelley is prolific at scoring and passing. On defense, she is the conference leader in steals at 4.00 and is one of the quickest and most talented defenders in the A-Sun. The Lady Owls and the Lady Bulldogs will be meeting for the seventh time with the teams splitting the first six meetings. Since joining the A-Sun, Kennesaw State has lost three of the last four meetings, but did defeat the Lady Bulldogs the last time the teams met, 67-49, at the KSU Convocation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the KSU Convocation Center. The game can be seen live on ASun.TV with announcers Nathan McCreary and Dave Albert presenting the action. |
