Owls Finish Fourth at Nationals
April 12, 2008
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the third consecutive season the Kennesaw State competitive cheer team secured a top four finish at the 2008 NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships. The Owls, who have been a Division I program for just three seasons, finished in fourth place in the All-Girl Division I Championships, trailing only three-time national championship Maryland, Ohio State and Louisville. "We just didn't perform like Kennesaw State today, said head coach Felecia Mulkey. "We didn't hit everything we wanted to this evening and we came off the floor disappointed. But, we improved from yesterday and I am very proud of our team." In the finals, Kennesaw State was one of teams to again have sub-total scores of better than 9.00 as the Owls, Louisville and Maryland again set the standard for All-Girl Division I . Although, none of the three favorites had clean routines, Louisville had the highest sub-total score of 9.195 followed by Maryland at 9.160 and the owls 9.115 score. The Cardinals suffered the highest deduction at .40, followed by Kennesaw State at .035 and Maryland at .25 point deduction. Ohio State, who routine was slightly more conservative than Maryland, KSU and Louisville, had just a.05 deduction as they moved into second place. "No one had a clean routine today," added Mulkey. "So it meant that it was anyone's game to win. The door was opened for everyone else today. In the judges opinion we were fourth place and I accept that because it is their professional opinion, but I do know that we have one of the best teams in the country." Once again, the Owls suffered deductions on their stunts even though they changed one of their stunt sequences before the finals. "Even though we improved a great deal," quipped Mulkey. "We stumbled a bit on our stunts although our first stunt sequence was excellent. We also hit our pyramids and once again we were a crowd favorite and that always means a great deal to us." 2008 NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships Final Standings |
