Masterful Matthews Honored Again
March 10, 2008
MACON, Ga. - After going 3-0 during the Under Armour Invitational with a pair of saves, Kennesaw State pitcher Brittany Matthews has been named this week's Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. The honor is the third of the season for Matthews and the sixth of her career. She won the accolade on February 11 and March 3 of this season, in addition to the three occasions in which she won the award last season. The Brooks, Ga., native started the week with a complete-game three-hit shutout of Sam Houston State. The next day, Matthews fired her fifth career no-hitter in an 8-0 victory over Quinnipiac. Matthews then appeared in the contest against Fairfield, striking out all six batters she faced in a two-inning save to preserve KSU's 1-0 win. On Sunday, Matthews started her final day of action during the week with a two-inning save in KSU's win over Indiana. Matthews struck out two batters and allowed a lone hit in the process. She was impressive again in her final outing of the week, throwing a complete-game four-hitter in the Owls 4-0 win over Syracuse. Matthews improved to 13-1 on the season. Her earned run average has fallen to 0.95 and her strikeout total for the season now stands at 155. Kennesaw State will be back in action this Wednesday when Georgia Tech visits Bailey Park. The doubleheader's first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. |
