Lamar's Three-Game Win Streak Ends With 10-3 Loss At Louisiana-Monroe
March 11, 2008 MONROE, La. -- Louisiana-Monroe scored 10 runs in the middle three innings to defeat Lamar, 10-3, in the first game of a two-game series at Warhawk Field Tuesday. With the score tied at 2-2 following single runs in each of the first four-half innings and a scoreless third, ULM scored three in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the sixth to run out to the big lead. The Cardinals mounted a small rally in the ninth when the first three batters reached safely and Ryan Saldivar scored on David Moore's single to make the score 12-3. But a lineout and double-play ended the game. Matison Smith (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs but just two earned as the Cards committed both of their errors while he was in the game. Lamar (9-5) standed 13 men, including leaving the bases loaded in the first three innings and at least one in seven of the nine frames. The Cardinals were unable to get their offense moving after scoring two runs on six hits in those early innings. LU ended the game with 11 hits, worked the ULM staff for six walks and a hit batter. Steven Tucker went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Jeff Vickers was 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a run. Brian Taylor led off the second inning with a home run to right field - his first of the season. Devin Pourciau (1-0) got the win for ULM (8-4) as he pitched five scoreless innings of three-hit relief. Ben Soignier went 5-for-6 with five singles with two runs and two RBI. Nick Wade had three hits and four RBI, capped off with a 3-run homer in the five-run fifth.
The two teams will play again on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Monroe. Lamar will then open Southland Conference play at Texas-Arlington on Friday. |
