Erickson Pitches Gem As Lamar Takes Series Over UTA, 9-5

March 16, 2008

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - Tim Erickson may not be a starter but he did everything a starter should do in leading Lamar to a 9-5 win over Texas-Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark Sunday.

Erickson came out of the bullpen after starter Brian Needham was unable to record an out through the first five batters, and got the three outs to end the inning but not before UTA took a 5-1 lead with all five runs charged to Needham.

Lamar got back on the board in the second inning when Anthony Moore belted a 3-run home run to cut the UTA lead to 5-4. An inning later, Keith Towne scored on a double play which knotted the score at 5-5. The Cardinals pushed two more runs across in the fourth when David Moore scored on a Steven Tucker ground out and Anthony Moore came home on a Jeff Vickers single.

The Cardinals added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on a Brent Harris 2-run homer. Lamar (11-7, 2-1 Southland) posted 13 hits and got its leadoff man on base in the first four innings and five of six. Eight of the nine runs were driven in by the top five men in the lineup.

Meanwhile, Erickson (1-0) was cruising along as he allowed a total of five hits, with three over the final seven innings and two of those in the ninth. From the fifth to the ninth innings he retired 14-consecutive batters as nine failed to get the ball out of the infield.

The senior closer also struck out seven while recording all 27 outs for a career-high 9.0 innings pitched. His previous high was 6.2 against Arkansas State last season.

Chris Dunkin led the Cards with a 3-for-5 day while Anthony Moore and Tucker had two hits apiece. Lamar set season-highs with three doubles and five extra-base hits, and went deep twice for the second-straight day.

UTA fell to 6-12 on the year and 1-2 in SLC action.

Lamar will conclude its six-game road trip on Tuesday at Houston (12-6). First pitch at Cougar Field is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on KLVI 560-AM.
