Lamar Gets Past Wild Nicholls State Bunch, 5-2

Nicholls State Live Audio via ThibodauxOnLine.com - Scroll down to the Baseball Live Audio Streaming link THIBODAUX, La. -- Lamar scored four runs with two outs in the fifth and that was all starter Brian Sisk needed to hold off a scrappy Nicholls State team as Lamar won 5-2 in the first game of a Southland Conference series at Ray Didier Field Friday night. Lamar (19-9, 9-1 SLC) won its eighth-consecutive conference game and 11th-straight over Nicholls State (5-23, 1-9). Nicholls opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of second. Brett Hoeflich led off with a triple to left center and scored when Anthony Wray singled down the left field line. Wray eventually scored from second on a T.J. Menerney single. Lamar tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth on a Steven Tucker single up the middle which allowed Anthony Moore and Brian Taylor to score. Chris Dunkin was then hit by Jake Parrish before David Moore walked to load the bases. The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead on the second wild pitch of the inning that allowed all three runners to advance. Travis Dunson then hit a ground ball that Kevin Kulbeth misplayed at shortstop when David Moore crossed in front of the ball allowing Dunkin to score and force Parrish from the game with LU ahead 4-2.
In the seventh, Jeff Vickers drove in his team-leading 23rd RBI with a sacrfice fly to centerfield. Sisk (6-1) meanwhile settled down from his shaky second inning to win his third-consecutive game. His complete-game, five-strikeout performance was his longest outing of the season and his second complete game. For the Colonels, Parrish (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing all four runs in the fifth, despite striking out four in 4.2 innings. He also walked four, hit one and had four wild pitches. Lamar finished with just five hits but had base runners on in seven of the first eight innings thanks to eight bases on balls and a hit batter. Dunson saw his career-best 11-game hitting streak come to an end despite reaching on an error in the fifth, while Dunkin extended his streak to 11 with a lead-off double in the seventh. Anthony Moore had two walks and three stolen bases. His bid to tie the school record of four, which is held by four different players, was snuffed out in the eighth when he was thrown out at second. He is now 10-for-13 on the season. The teams will continue their series with game two on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Didier Field. |
