Lamar Wins Seventh Straight With 80-66 Triumph Over Texas-Arlington
Feb. 14, 2008
Kenny Dawkins scored 14 second-half points and made four 3-pointers to lead five players in double-figures as Lamar extended its winning streak to seven with an 80-66 victory over Texas-Arlington at the Montagne Center Thursday night. Dawkins finished with 19 points, handed out eight assists and had four of Lamar's 13 steals as he played the entire game before leaving to a standing ovation in the final minute. Justin Nabors had 14 points and five offensive rebounds off the bench, while Darren Hopkins had 13, Lamar Sanders 11 and Brandon McThay 10. Sanders finished with seven boards, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Lamar (14-8, 8-1 Southland) continued its strong play in winning its seventh-consecutive conference game. The last time a Cardinal team won as many league games in a row came in 1983-84 when Pat Foster's group won their final nine games for a 11-1 mark and the last regular-season title in school history. Lamar scored the game's first nine points before UTA trimmed the Cardinal lead to 11-8 with 14:42 left in the first. Lamar then went on a 15-0 run over the next 4:15 to pull out to a 26-8 margin with the final nine points coming from outside treys by Currye Todd, McThay and Jay Brown. The Cardinals made 11 3-pointers but shot just 44 percent overall. Lamar led by 12 at the half thanks in large part to 19 points off 15 UTA turnovers. The Cardinals also had nine steals and got one 3-pointer from six of their eight players.
UTA got the deficit to seven with 9:06 left but Lamar 15-6 run over the next 3:25 to put the game out of reach. For UTA (16-7, 5-5), Jermaine Griffin was a perfect 10-of-10 from the floor for 21 points, while Larry Posey had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Rog'er Guignard, the Mavs' second-leading scorer at 12.6 points per game, scored just three points in 10 minutes after leaving the game with an apparent injury to his right shoulder. The Mavericks used their size advantage inside to hold a 39-28 edge in rebounding but committed 24 turnovers that the Cardinals turned into 29 points. UTA had 13 points off 11 Lamar miscues. Lamar will travel to Texas State on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game that will be televised on FSN Southwest. |
