LU Men Drop SLC Match to UTPA 4-3

EDINBURG, Texas - The Lamar University men's tennis team dropped a tightly contested match against the University of Texas-Pan American on Saturday, falling 4-3 to the Broncs in Edinburg, Texas.

Lamar falls to 5-13 overall and 0-2 in Southland Conference play with the loss while UTPA improves to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in SLC play with the win.

The Cards began the day by winning the doubles point, as LU won at No. 1 and No. 3. LU prevailed at No. 1 doubles as the duo of Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz defeated Brett Bernstein and Ashwin Vijayaragavan 8-6 while Mario Janjic and David Wanja took down Marcus Dornauf and Andrew Irving 9-8 at No. 3. In the match at No. 2 doubles UTPA's Ivan Avila and Nirvick Mohinta took out Allan Gomes and Diego Snyder 8-1.

In singles play the Cardinals picked up a pair of victories at No. 1 and No. 3, but could not hold on for the fourth point of the match, dropping the other four matches. Kanczula won at No. 1 6-4, 6-4 over Ivan Avila and Janjic was victorious at No. 3, posting a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mohinta.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they take on the University of Texas-Arlington in Arlington, Texas. They will return home for a Sunday matchup against Nicholls State which is set to begin at noon.
