Cardinals Netters Notch 5-2 Win over Nicholls State

Results

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University men's tennis team picked up a huge 5-2 win over Nicholls State Sunday afternoon at the Cardinals Courts.

Lamar improves to 6-14 overall and 1-3 in Southland Conference play with the win while Nicholls State falls to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in SLC play with the loss.

The match began with Nicholls claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles while LU won at No. 3 doubles. Maria Janjic and David Wanja claimed an 8-3 victory over Sami Mouline and Chris Hernandez while Radu Ionescu and Vlad Popa defeated Filip Kanczula Maciej Bogusz 8-5 at No. 1 with Eric Fisher and Phenyo Matong taking down Allan Gomes and Diego Snyder 8-5 at No. 2.

The Cards took control of the match in singles play as Kanczula dismissed Radu Ionescu 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 and Gomes beat Rohan Shetty 6-4, 6-2 to give Lamar a 2-1 advantage. Andres Medina then gave LU a 3-1 lead when he closed out his match at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alex Gasca-Silav.

Nicholls closed the gap to 3-2 when Phenyo Matong took down Snyder at No. 4 3-6, 7-6. 6-1 at No. 4, but the Cardinals would not go down on their home court.

Bogusz and Janjic were victorious at two and three, giving Lamar their first conference win. Bogusz held on for a 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 win over Fisher at No. 2 and Janjic took down Popa 3-6, 7-6. 6-1 at No. 3.
 

 

The Cards will be back in action on Friday afternoon at the Cardinals Courts when they play host to Southern University at 2 p.m.
