Men's Tennis drops two in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas - Battling cold weather and a blistering Lubbock wind, the Lamar University men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend against Texas Tech and Abilene Christian on Friday and Saturday.

In Friday's action against the Red Raiders the doubles point was not played and the Cardinals were swept in singles play, losing the match 6-0.

Diego Snyder had the strongest sowing for LU, falling in three games to Michael Breler 1-6, 7-6, 10-4 at No. five, while Filip Kanczula lost his match at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3 to Bojan Szumanski 6-4, 6-3. Mario Janjic, who transferred from Texas Tech before last season dropped his match at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-3 to Sinisa Markovic.

Lamar's Allan Gomes fell at No. 3 6-1, 6-2 to Lenoir Ramos and Maciej Bogusz was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Ilya Babinciuc at No. 5 while David Wanja dropped his match in the six spot 6-2, 6-2 to Christian Rojmar.

In Saturday's action against Abilene Christian, the Cardinals were handed a tough 4-3 loss.

The Cardinals narrowly dropped the doubles point with Gomes and Janjic falling 9-8 to Juan Nunez and Brian Joiner at No. 2 while Snyder and Wanja were handed an 8-6 loss at No. 3 by Hutton Jones Jr. and Brett Proctor. The Cards top doubles team of Kanczula and Bogusz won their match 9-8 over Ryan Hudson and Luke Hawk.

In singles play the Cards and Wildcats split the points 3-3 as Kanczula Snyder and Gomes all picked up wins. Kanczula defeated Nunez 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1, Snyder knocked out Joey Farias 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Gomes easily took down Hawk 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.
 

 

The Cardinals almost took the match with a win at No. 5 singles, but Bogusz was edged out 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 by Joiner. Janjic dropped his match at No. 2 6-2, 6-3 to Hudson and Proctor handed Wanja a 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 6.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Houston to take on the Rice Owls at 2:30 p.m.
