Distance Runners Cap Off Day One of the SLC Outdoor Championship

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Four Lamar University athletes took to the track on Friday night in Huntsville, Texas for the 10,000 meter run at the 45th annual Southland Conference Outdoor Track Championships at Sam Houston State University.

Samuel Kosgei led the way for the Lamar men, running to a third place finish in a time of 31:28.55. He spent the majority of the race in a close battle with Henry Rop and Kalphys Kemboi of Southeastern Louisiana. The two Lions grabbed first and second respectively in times of 31:26.23 and 31:26.26.

Frank Bwambale and Randy Becker also finished in the top eight, scoring points for the LU men in the only running event of day one. Bwambale crossed the finish line in sixth place in a time of 33:00.48 while Becker took eighth place in a time of 33:29.11.

In the women's 10,000 Stacey Monteau ran to a ninth place finish in a time of 41:25.08

The rest of the Lamar track and field teams will be in action on Saturday, beginning with Brittney Williams in the shot put at 1 p.m. while the running event preliminaries start at 5 p.m. On Sunday the running finals get underway at 5 p.m. and the meet will conclude with the running of the 4x400 meter relays.
