BEAUMONT - The Lamar University senior women's tennis player Andrea Martinez was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week after leading the Lady Cardinals to a 3-0 record last weekend.

Martinez propelled Lamar to a 3-0 team record last week with wins over UT-Arlington, Texas State and New Mexico State. With the wins the Lady Cardinals improve to 8-1 on the year and remain unbeaten at the Cardinal Courts.

Martinez, a native of Durango, Mexico, went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles with partner Mariaryeni Gutierrez. She swept both of her singles matches against SLC foes, winning 6-0, 6-4 over UTA's Klara Jagosova on Friday and then defeated Texas State's Andrea Giraldo 6-0, 6-1 on Saturday. She capped off the weekend by taking out Sophia Marks of NMSU 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 on Sunday.

In doubles play Martinez and Gutierrez started the weekend with an 8-3 win over UT-Arlington's Klara Jagosova Monika Hadvigerova and took down Andrea Giraldo and Lainy Chafitz of Texas State 8-4 on Saturday. The pair closed out their strong weekend with an 8-3 win over New Mexico State's Aleksa Costa and Sophia Marks.

Martinez and the Lady Cardinals are on the road during spring this week, taking o several opponents in Florida before returning home for a home match against Marist on Monday March 17 at 2 p.m.
