Johnson Highlights Ty Terrell Relays With Record Setting Performance
April 24, 2008 BEAUMONT - In their final action before the Southland Conference championship meet the Lamar University track and field teams ran at the 47th Annual Ty Terrell Relays at the Ty Terrell Track. Jessika Johnson had the highlight of the meet for LU, racing to a school record and regional qualifying time of 13.68 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles. She bested the 15 year old record of Tunesia Ashford who clocked a 13.86 during the 1993 season. Megan Bibbs also ran a personal-best time in the 100 hurdles, clocking a time of 14.57 seconds, while Adrianne Johnson crossed the finish line in 15 seconds. In the women's 200 meter dash Lamar finished in third, fourth, fifth and sixth, led by Ashley Smith who crossed the line in a personal-best time of 25.30. Bibbs, Adrianne Johnson and Sahara Abraham also ran season-bests, crossing in 25.62, 25.80 and 25.83 respectively. Toni Sylvester led the way for LU in the women's 400 meter dash as she posted a time of 55.26 for a first place finish, while Brittany Pollard crossed in 56.57 in second place. Porshe Williams had her best performance of the year as she clocked a season-best time of 59.94 seconds for a seventh place finish. In the 400 meter hurdles Alexandra Mayfield notched a first place finish with a 1:04.25 performance. Angel Bassett also had a solid performance, running to a second place finish in a time of 1:06.55. In the distance races Clerc Koenck led the way for the Lady Cardinals with a first place performance in the 1,500 meter run in a time of 4:42.39. Mercy Bungei finished in second place in the 800 meter run with a 2:25.20 performance and Stacey Monteau grabbed a second place finish in the 3,000 meter run with an 11:14.31 performance.
In Lamar's only field event action on the women's side, Brittney Williams finished second in the shot put with a toss of 33 feet 11 and a half inches. In the relays Lamar notched a first place finish in the mile relay, clocking a time of 3:50.43, while taking second in the 4x100 meter relay in a time of 48.62. In the men's competition the day was highlighted by the 100 meter dash performance of Michael Gauthier who sprinted to a regional qualifying time of 10.42 seconds for first place. Daniel Wheaton also clocked a season-best time of 11.33 seconds in the 100 meter dash. Gauthier continued his strong performance in the men's 200 meter dash with a first place run, edging out teammate Stephen Boone with a time of 21.76 seconds. Boone crossed the line on second place in 21.79 seconds. Wheaton finished in sixth place in a time of 23.56 seconds. All three times were season-bests. In the men's 400 meter dash Jerel Massenburge and Julius Kasule finished one-two, crossing the line in 48.79 seconds and 49.21 seconds respectively. Greg Williams and Michael Fisher also ran well, posting times of 49.96 and 51.94 respectively. In the men's 800 meter run Francis Kasagule led the way with a first place performance in a time of 1:53.38 while Ewan Simpson grabbed second place in a time of 1:56.31. Jared Rodriguez and Spencer Prudhomme also finished in the top eight, with Rodriguez finishing in seventh in 2:02.02 and Prudhomme taking eighth in 2:02.80. Frank Bwambale captured first place in the 1,500 meter run, posting a season-best time of 4:02.05 while Randy Becker ran to a 4:03.69 finish for second place. The Cardinals men's relay team grabbed first place in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. Lamar ran the 4x100 in a time of 42.12 and the 4x400 team crossed the finish line in a time of 3:22.76. In the only field event action of the day, JaMarkus Tolbert registered a second place finish in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet. In other action at the relays, women's pole vaulter Dana Ellis-Buller posted a mark of 4.44 meters (14-07.00feet) which equals the sixth best vault in the world this year. The mark is also a new Ty Terrell Relays record and a Ty Terrell Stadium record. The previous record was 12-09.50, held by Jennie Sewell of Sam Houston State. |
