Kasagule and Koenck Named SLC Indoor Track Athletes of the Week
Feb. 6, 2008
BEAUMONT - After record setting performances at the Houston Invitational over the weekend Lamar University's Francis Kasagule and Clerc Koenck each picked up their second Southland Conference indoor track athlete of the week honors of the season on Wednesday. Koenck set a new Lamar University and Southland Conference record in the one mile run at the Houston Indoor Invitational with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:47.77, almost one second better than the prior record of 4:48.70 run by Ruth Waller of McNeese State in 2004. The 4:47.77 is 16 seconds faster than the second-best performance in the conference this season. This is the sixth time in her career that Koenck has garnered athlete of the week honors and the third of the 2007-08 school year. She was named indoor track athlete f the week after her record setting 3,000 meter run performance on January 12, earned cross country athlete of the week on October 16 after and impressive showing at Pre-Nationals and earned two awards during the 2007 track season. Overall she has collected four track and two cross country athlete of the week awards. Kasagule set a new Lamar University record in the mile with a 4:07.23 performance at the Houston Indoor Invitational. He was nine seconds ahead of the second place finisher and edged his previous best of 4:07.27 which he ran last year. This is the seventh athlete of the week honor Kasagule, who is a two time NCAA All American in cross country, has earned. He collected two awards during the cross country season in the fall, along with three during the 2007 track season. He collected two during the indoor season and one in the outdoor season last year. Kasagule, Koenck and the rest of the Lamar cross country men's and women's teams will be back in action on Saturday when they run at the Red Raider Invitational at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
