Explorer Student-Athletes to Participate in Philly Spring Cleanup

April 3, 2008

La Salle student-athletes are set to participate in the Philly Spring Cleanup this Saturday from 9am-2pm. The event, which is an effort by Mayor Michael Nutter to help reduce the amount of litter and trash in Philadelphia, will be held at several different locations throughout the city. Explorer student-athletes will help clean the Olney Avenue corridor adjacent to the La Salle campus.

The cleanup signifies the beginning of the "Love Where You Live" anti-litter campaign implemented by Mayor Nutter. The project aims to raise litter prevention awareness among Philadelphians and create a sense of neighborhood pride in order to keep the city clean.

Among the goals of the one-day cleanup are to engage over 10,000 volunteers in a day of service, clean 5,000 residential blocks in the city and remove over one million pounds of litter and trash. At the conclusion of the event, volunteers are invited to join Mayor Nutter at Lincoln Financial Field for a post-cleanup barbeque.

"It's great to see La Salle student-athletes take advantage of the opportunity to be a part of an event that not only helps our  neighborhood, but the entire city," says Mike Ellerson, Director of Project Teamwork. The Explorer teams that will be involved are men's and women's soccer, swimming and diving, field hockey and volleyball, as well as other members of the University community.
