Explorers Fall to Visiting Hartford, 11-6.

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University Baseball team fell 11-6 to the visiting Hartford Hawks on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.

Justin Handler gave the Explorers a 2-0 lead with a two-RBI triple in the second and John Malloy made it 4-1 after his two-RBI triple in the fourth.

Hartford (1-1) took its first lead of the day with a four-run top of the fifth inning as they sent eight men to the plate and chased La Salle starter Drew Gerhart.

La Salle (1-11) responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when Chris Umstead, who went 3-for-4 on the day and scored two runs, drove in Mike Dertouzos with his second double of the game.


 

 

The Explorers took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh when Kevin Jones hit a two-out double and scored a batter later on Rick Gehman's single up the middle.

The Hawks then took command of the game with three runs in the top of the eighth - the key hit a Drew Sgro two-RBI double. The junior went 2-for-3, while scoring two runs and driving in five.

Brady Stouffer, who was 4-for-4 and scored four runs, hit a two-RBI triple in the ninth and scored on Sgro's sacrifice fly to put the Hawks up 11-6.

La Salle takes a day off before hosting Lafayette (Tuesday) and Villanova (Wednesday) at Hank DeVincent Field each game starting at 3 PM.
