May 7, 2008
PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The La Salle University Baseball team lost a non-conference game to the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, 11-7, at Hawks Stadium, Wednesday. The Explorers outhit the Hawks 10-8 in the contest, but they were hurt in the error filled game by unearned runs, as they committed seven errors resulting in seven runners crossing the plate. The Hawks scored a single run in each of the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead, as Pat Hercinger doubled to score the first, Jorge Pichardo hit a sacrifice fly to score the second, and Hercinger scored the third on an error. La Salle would erase the three-run deficit after pushing one run across the plate in the fifth - RBI single by Justin Handler scores John Malloy - and a getting a pair in the sixth. Mike Dertouzos doubled to score RJ Hollinshead then came around to score himself on a Mike Canfarotta grounder to short. Maryland-Eastern Shore (6-45) responded with four in the bottom of the sixth to push its lead to 7-3 as an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed a pair of those runs to score. Phil Vaughn would drive in the fourth of the inning with a double. The Explorers had a chance to get back into the contest in the top of the seventh, as they started the frame with three walks to load the bases. However, Hawk reliever Elliott Arrington registered three straight outs and allowed just one run to score on a groundout. With the three-run lead, the Hawks put the game out of reach with four more in the seventh, the big blow was delivered by Vaughn - a bases-clearing double - which put them up 11-4.
Handler hit an RBI single in the eighth inning - scoring Canfarotta - and John Rickards drove in Brian Meagher with a sacrifice fly to pull the Explorers to within five. Dertouzos added an RBI - plating Kevin Jones - in the ninth, but the late deficit was just too much to overcome. Dan Sterling (1-8) picked up the win for the Hawks after throwing six innings and Arrington earned his first save after three innings of relief. Joe Vincent (0-4) took the loss for the Explorers. The Explorers had five guys each with two hits - Jones, Hollinshead and Canfarotta, as well as Handler and Dertouzos, who each also drove in a pair of runs. La Salle (12-34) will now turn its attention to George Washington, who the Explorers will host this weekend in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Hank DeVincent Field, starting on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12 PM. |
