PHILADELPHIA - La Salle men's basketball assistant coach Harris Adler took his Explorer expertise to the international level last week as he helped guide Maccabi USA's Open Men's Basketball Team to a gold medal in the 18th World Maccabiah Games. Adler served as an assistant under Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl, who led Team USA.

The team earned the gold with a 95-86 overtime win over host Israel. This is the third gold for the Americans in the past 24 years at the quadrennial event after winning seven from 1950-81. Israel - the defending champion - took silver, while Canada earned the bronze.

Team USA's Dan Grunfeld drained a 3-pointer with 20.7 seconds to play to tie the game, and scored six points in overtime to seal the win.

This year's event was the second go-around for Adler as an assistant to the team. He was on the sidelines back in 2005 when Team USA won the bronze medal.

"The experience starting from training camp at La Salle to winning the gold medal has been one of the most rewarding moments of my life," Adler said. "I just want to thank Coach Giannini, and the basketball staff for allowing me to come back to Israel and living this memorable experience during the very busy recruiting period."

The Maccabiah Games, which occur every four years, are open to all Israeli citizens as well as Jewish people around the globe and is one of the largest sporting events in the world.
