![]() Offensive Surge Gives Explorers Victory Over Presbyterian
March 3, 2010 PHILADELPHIA- Four Explorers put up multi-goal games, including redshirt senior Jill Davis and freshmen Melanie Sarcinello and Lauren McDermott who all found the back of the net three times in a 13-3 victory over Presbyterian College on Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium. Davis also dished out two assists, helping her to lead all scorers with five points.
With just under six minutes into the game, sophomore Taylor Ruland gave the Explorers a 1-0 lead after receiving a pass from Davis. Ruland’s goal was just the beginning of a scoring-outbreak the Explorers had within the ensuing nine minutes, causing them to jump out to a 4-0 lead to open the game.
Davis had a hand in La Salle’s first three goals in Wednesday’s game with a goal and two assists.
After Davis scored the team’s second goal of the night six seconds after Ruland’s tally, Sarcinello got her productive night underway as she scored back-to-back goals to get La Salle out to the four-point advantage.
Senior Jenna Handshoe, Presbyterian’s leading scorer, ended La Salle’s opening surge by scoring a goal about a minute after the team was forced to play shorthanded once sophomore Jill Parker went off after being tabbed with a yellow card.
Presbyterian got used to playing shorthanded as it also lost freshman Mary Honan for three minutes after she also picked up a yellow card for committing a check to the head. Before the penalty was committed, Presbyterian cut the deficit in half when sophomore Laura Meade scored.
Just over seven minutes later, La Salle felt its lead slipping away even more when freshman Lauren Lefeber assisted on a goal scored by sophomore Katie Prisco to pull the Blue Hose within a goal of the Explorers, at 4-3.
The one-goal deficit is the closest the Blue Hose would come, as the Explorers exploded for nine straight unassisted goals over the course of the remainder of the game.
Before the end of the first half, Lauren McDermott, sophomore Rachel Baker and senior Stefany McKee added tallies for the Explorers, yielding them to a 7-3 advantage at intermission.
When the second half began, La Salle picked up the momentum it left on the field at the conclusion of the first half, as Davis scored her second goal of the game not even a minute and a half into the second stanza.
In the next 17 minutes, the Explorers put together five more goals to ultimately increase the deficit to 10 points in their favor, compliments of Sarcinello, McDermott’s two goals and another goal a piece from Davis and Baker.
The 13-goal outburst came at the consequence of Presbyterian’s 24 turnovers and its allowance of 27 Explorer shots on goal, as opposed to the Blue Hose’s eight.
Causing 10 Blue Hose turnovers helped the Explorers pick up 16 ground balls in the game. Sarcinello and sophomore Nora McGurkin each picked up three.
Sophomore Megan Corliss had a much quieter time in net after seeing 32 shots on goal in each of her team’s first two games. Corliss made five saves on eight of Presbyterian’s shots.
The win over the Blue Hose marks the second straight season in which the Explorers' first win of the season has come at the hands of Presbyterian.
As Spring Break approaches La Salle University, the lacrosse team (1-2) will remain on campus to host the Lafayette Leopards at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. |
