49ers Remain Undefeated in Big West Play
NORTHRIDGE--Long Beach State (12-5) became the last undefeated team in the Big West Conference, defeating formerly undefeated and host CS Northridge (9-5) 6-1 on Friday afternoon. The 49ers swept the doubles point and won five of six singles matches. LBSU has now won nine of their last 10 and all five conference matches this year.
The doubles team of Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton won their 12th in a row 8-4, as all three doubles team trailed 2-3 before each winning 8-4. The No. 31 team in the nation, Stephanie Bengson and Hannah Grady, also won 6-4. In singles play Stephanie Bengson moved to two wins away from the all-time singles record with a straight-set victory, while No. 116-ranked Hannah Grady also won in straight sets. Also winning in straight sets was Sutton, who won 6-4, 7-6. The win should propel the 49ers into the top part of the conference standings for the Big West Tournament near the end of April. The 49ers are next in action when they travel up the Central Coast to play at UC Santa Barabara on Thursday and at Cal Poly on Saturday. DOUBLES (LBSU won 3-of-3 for 1 point)
