April 14, 2008

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Seniors Jon Guzzo and Tim Harmatys threw complete games to guide the Flyers to a pair of 2-1 victories over Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday afternoon.

In game two, Guzzo (4-0) allowed only three hits and one earned run while striking out four in nine innings of work. It was Guzzo's second complete game after going the distance in a 6-0 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside on Wednesday.

The only blemish on Guzzo's line was a single run in the bottom of the fifth. But Lewis already had a 2-0 lead after scoring in the second and third. The Flyers run in the second came on a Bingham sacrifice fly to score junior Chris McCall who leadoff the inning with a double. The Flyers scored the would be winning run in the third when freshman Mike Vucsko scored all the way from first on a single by senior Mike Smith.

Game one was the same score, but not as easy for the Flyers. Harmatys' pitched well but Lewis had to rally late after the Panthers got on the board in the fifth. Lewis tied it in the top of the sixth when junior Tim Bingham grounded out with the bases loaded to knock in senior Billy Duffy. The Flyers took the lead in the top of the seventh with station to station baseball. Sophomore Ryan McManaman walked to lead off the inning. Vucsko bunted him over to second. A Duffy groundout advanced McManamnan to third. McManaman then scored on a balk by Kentucky Wesleyan for the go ahead run.

Harmatys (2-0) walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh, but then retired the next three to give the Flyers the 2-1 victory in game one. Harmatys allowed eight hits, three walks and one earned run in seven innings.

Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 14-27 (5-15 GLVC) while Lewis improves to 12-17 (7-11 GLVC).

The Flyers have a quick turnaround, playing at Robert Morris tomorrow at 6 p.m.
