Flyers Take Two

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis University men's volleyball team swept Newbury and Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foe Mercyhurst on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. Lewis defeated Newbury 32-30, 30-26, 30-27 and topped Mercyhurst 30-19, 34-32, 30-14.

Against Mercyhurst (3-14, 0-7 MIVA) juniors Alex Vigansky and Billy Sahagian both notched double-digit kills. Vigansky had ten with only one error to hit .692. Sahagian notched 11 and hit .600 with only two errors. The Flyers had 13 aces, with junior Drew Pickering leading the team with four and freshman Brian Muesenfechter knocking home three. Senior Jared Dayton also finished with double-digit kills. He totaled 10 and recorded two aces.

Game two was the only game in doubt as Lewis had to fight off two game points to take the game. Sahagian notched a solo block and Pickering drove home a kill for the final two points of the game.

Against Newbury (25-8), junior David Kelnhofer set a career high with 22 kills. He also notched four blocks (two solo) and three aces. Junior Tom Garvey added seven kills and freshman Matt Gallik recorded six. Junior Jordan Vidovic had 43 assists sand eight digs. Sophomore Jake Conrad set a career high with ten digs.

The Flyers trailed through parts of game two, but took over with the score tied at 26. A Kelnhofer kill and three straight blocks followed to give game two to the Flyers.

The Flyers improve to 15-6 (5-2 MIVA). Lewis hosts NJIT tomorrow at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match.
