LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Jennifer Green's career-high 21 points wasn't enough to lift the Flyers over the Knights as Bellarmine defeated Lewis 94-78 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game Saturday afternoon. The Flyers took a quick 5-0 advantage but the Knights offense didn't rest for long. Bellarmine grabbed a seven-point lead on a jumper by Dana Beaven with 7:53 on the clock. But the Flyers responded in a big way, outscoring Bellarmine 19-4 over the next four minutes. The run was highlighted by big shots from the outside. Sophomore Kaci Baird knocked down a trey with an assist by Green. A steal by freshman Kady Currin set up a Green 3-pointer to give the Flyers a two-point lead at 29-27 with 4:52 left. After a layup by freshman Jenny Turpel, back-to-back 3-pointers by Currin gave the Flyers an eight-point lead at 37-29 with 3:42 left. The Flyers would take a 43-40 lead into the break. After Green scored the first points of the second half on a layup, the Knights scored the next 13 and took a 53-45 lead. Lewis responded though, scoring the next six points. Turpel started it with two free-throws. After a steal by junior Lauren Martens, Turpel attempted a jumper. The shot was off but Martens was there for the rebound and put it back to get the Flyers within two. The Knights built their lead up to seven again, but Baird got the Flyers within two at 65-63 on a jumper with 8:03 left. However, the Flyers wouldn't get any closer and the Knights extended their lead down the stretch. The difference in the second half came on the boards. The two squads were tied at the half with 16 rebounds each. But in the final period the Knights out-rebounded the Flyers 29-11, including nine offensive boards. Despite the edge in rebounding the Flyers led in points in the paint 40-36. But Bellarmine shot 29 free throws to the Flyers 15. Green's 21 points was the most by a Flyer this season. She also set career highs with 10 field goals and eight assists. Turpel finished with 17 points and two steals. Junior Kelly Dianis added 12 points. For Bellarmine, Beaven finished with a double-double of 23 points and 12 boards. Angela Smith added 18 points. The Knights improved to 16-7 (8-4 GLVC) and the Flyers fell to 9-9 (5-6 GLVC). The Flyers host GLVC rival Southern Illinois Edwardsville Thursday at 5:30 p.m. |
