Feb. 23, 2008 HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A one-hit shutout by junior Courtney Lyons lifted the Lewis Flyers to their first win of the season in a 5-0 victory over Delta State, Saturday afternoon at the Charger Chillout, hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Lyons (1-2) struck out nine batters and yielded only a bunt single. Offensively, the Flyers received a two-RBI double from freshman Diana Pickrum and a solo home run from pinch hitter Stephanie Harmon. The homer was the first of the freshman's career. Junior Carissa Castonzo added three hits for Lewis in the game. Earlier in the day the Flyers fell 2-1 in a tight game with North Alabama. Lewis led 1-0 before a two-run homer doomed the Flyers in the fourth inning. Senior Mallory Paine went 3-for-3 in the game and collected the lone RBI with a single into left after a double by junior Jessica Beck. Junior Julie Wingerter (0-1) suffered the loss in the first game for the Flyers, despite striking out seven batters. The Flyers (1-5) play Valdosta State and North Georgia on Sunday. |
